Te Tihi o Ruahine Charitable Trust, along with their Partners, created Kāinga Whanau Ora as a Pilot initiative working with whānau living in Housing NZ in Palmerston North. Outside Insight is an important piece of work that helps the reader to understand the systemic and service delivery environment that whānau and services negotiate daily. The purpose is to understand what the building blocks may be that are conducive to whānau independence and ultimately Whānau Ora. The document begins by posing this question to the viewer: How will my own bias affect my ability to view this information in a way that puts the pilot objectives at the fore?.

I designed this document alongside Gene Takurua and his team at Te Tihi in 2017 and 2018. I worked with Gene to understand the study, and used my graphic design and illustration skills as the vehicle to present the information to kaimahi and whānau. This was a very rich experience for me and has had an impact on my practice ever since. Massive thanks to Gene for all his time and knowledge.

This project lead me to building a relationship with one of Te Tihi’s partners, Central PHO, who rebranded to be THINK Hauora in 2019. I went on to be part of that rebrand, which you can see here →

Ka kohi te toi, ka whai te māramatanga

When knowledge is gathered, enlightenment will follow

This whakataukī was chosen to finish the document specifically. In context, the knowledge has been gathered. It is then up to the reader to decide what level of enlightenment is achieved.
